Battle of Adwa Youth 2012 Essay Contest
Description, Prizes & Deadline: Youth essay contest commemorating the Battle of Adwa won March 1st 1896. The aim is to increase youth awareness of a rich and proud cultural legacy of resistance and triumph. Participants may select only one of the questions/topics below.
1. Why was the Battle of Adwa an important African victory?
2. How did this epic battle shape the course of European colonialism?
3. Discuss the military strategy employed by Emperor Menelik II and Empress Taitu.
Essays will be judged in two categories: Senior (grades 9-12) and Junior (grades 5-8), with separate prizes awarded to the winners in each category.
Senior Junior
1st prize: $100 1st prize: $50
2nd prize: $50 2nd prize: $25
3rd prize: gift 3rd prize: gift
***A bonus of $100 will be awarded to the independent school with the most submissions***
The entry deadline for this contest is February 29, 2012. All entries MUST be postmarked by this date or submitted electronically by end of day. Winners will be announced and awards will be presented at the Battle of Adwa Youth Fest March 11, 2012.
Eligibility: The contest is open to all students of African descent enrolled in public, private or home-schooled environment during the 2011-2012 academic year in Atlanta and surrounding areas.
Format and Contents: Senior essays should be about 1,000 words, neat, and legible (double spaced, typed required). Junior essays should be about 500 words, neat, and legible (double spaced, typed preferred). Essays will be judged on originality, historical accuracy, scholarship (including works cited) and presentation. Please see attached rubric for detailed judging criteria (see below). Include your name, age, address, telephone number, school and grade on the essay. All entries will not be returned and may become a part of the Battle of Adwa Youth Fest Display.
